5 days later
Kathryn slowly opened her eye. It was sore from the crying, but to lift her arms would tug on the tubes so she just let the tears race down her cheek.
Doctor Wade told her everything yesterday: She was raped and almost beaten to death. He used the word “savagely”, which did not seem to be something a doctor would say, but she remembered that part as clear as snow on a mountain. Her body could still feel such effects.
And it hurt.
Hurt. Pain. She felt the burn in her throat flow across her body.
And she had the scars to prove it. The most visible was across her face. Wade had the means to diminish or remove the scars over her body … but her face was different. Under the scars was the vacant space her jade-green eye used to fill.
Pain. Hate. She hated this place. Being in the bed. Not being at home or work. She hated that she could not move without being in pain. She hated it was the middle of the night.
Kathryn realized all she could feel was hate.
“Why am I suffering? No one should suffer like this. I should just die. Life is not worth living like this.”
“No,” she said aloud.
Over the days Kathryn remembered what had happened. The police showed her what was done to Mark Vargis and told her that she did it to him. She smirked at the memory of the detective incredulously describing how they had to scoop Vargis’ remains into bowls and bags. Murder was murder, but considering she used an ability - a super-power - in self-defense the case would be dropped. It seems Kathryn was not the only victim. She was the only one to fight back … and win.
She was never one to keep a grudge and revenge was a concept she never exercised. Her “target” was dead. So could she unleash any hatred upon anyone else? Was there a way to vent? She needed to do something. Words were not enough.
What was she going to do now? Kathryn still didn’t accept she had “super-powers” but Dr. Wade can’t explain it in other words. He reminded her of Daikar’s visit.
She looked at her wrist and noticed the tattoo that was not there before Daikar's visit.
“Power.” She knew enough Japanese to recall that is what it said.
“That is my sign. I will find you Daikar and you will give me answers.”
Kathryn pushed the button to elevate the bed to a sitting position. She had had enough rest.
Time to recover.
